Saint Marcian is traditionally honoured as the first bishop of Tortona, a city in northern Italy. According to early Christian tradition, he helped bring the Gospel to the region during the 1st and 2nd centuries, when Christianity was still spreading across the Roman Empire. As a missionary bishop, Marcian worked to plant the seeds of the Christian faith, guiding believers and strengthening the early Church in the area. His dedication to Christ eventually led to persecution, and he is venerated as a martyr who gave his life for the faith. Februar Bischof von Smyrna, Märtyrer, Apostolischer Vater * um 69 † 155 oder 156 in Smyrna, dem heutigen Ízmir in der Türkei Polykarp kannte noch den Apostel Johannes und wurde von ihm zum Bischof von Smyrna bestellt (vgl. Offb 2, 8-11). Als Sprecher der Kirchen von Kleinasien verhandelte er 155 mit Papst Anicet über den Termin des Osterfestes. In Kleinasien muss er großen Einfluss gehabt haben; die Heiden nannten ihn „den Lehrer Asiens, den Vater der Christen, den Zerstörer der Götter“. Als der römische Statthalter ihm befahl, Christus zu verfluchen, antwortete er: „Sechsundachtzig Jahre diene ich ihm, und er hat mir nie ein Leid getan; wie könnte ich meinen König lästern, der mich erlöst hat?“ Er wurde zum Tod auf dem Scheiterhaufen verurteilt, und als das Feuer ihn nicht tötete, mit einem Dolch durchbohrt. Saint Adelaide of Vilich | Wise Abbess and Reformer | Feast Day February 5 | Saint Story for Kids In today’s Saint Story for Kids, we learn about Saint Adelaide of Vilich, a holy and wise abbess who helped renew religious life in Germany during the Middle Ages. Not like a dusty history lesson, but like a reminder that God still opens eyes, restores what is broken, and rebuilds what the world leaves in ruins. Saint Vedast (Saint Vaast) was the kind of bishop who did not chase clout. He rebuilt the Church when cities were shattered, faith was fragile, and people kept drifting back to old ways. He helped form the faith in the days of King Clovis, then spent decades doing the gritty work of evangelizing towns and countryside one soul at a time. And yes, there is the wild legend too.
