A controversy has erupted in Lanciano, Italy, after Father Alessio Primante wore a black-and-white keffiyeh during the annual Madonna del Ponte procession on 16 September. The priest, who is chancellor of the Curia and head of the diocesan school chaplaincy, draped the Palestinian scarf over his liturgical garments in the region’s most important religious event, attended by thousands of faithful.
The keffiyeh, a symbol of Palestinian identity and struggle, has also become politically charged, sometimes linked to militancy. The Liturgy in all its forms is apolitical by its very nature. It is not a means to a secular end but the End Itself, a foretaste of the splendour of the Holy Trinity in Heaven with all the angels and saints. In the traditional Liturgy, the distinction between the profane and spiritual, the primacy of God, and heavenly things over passing worldly things is crystal clear. It orients our eyes, and ears to Eternity, and the all-at-once perfect possession of everlasting life. The focus and preoccupation of the new Liturgy is on man, and transient, earthly things. In the new Liturgy, the all-importance of God. Heaven and Eternal Life is blurred at best. Our earthly pilgrimage becomes both means and end in and of itself. It is quite normal, therefore, in the new Liturgy, anthropomorphic in nature, that political symbolism take precedence over religious orientation and eternal, spiritual symbolism. No surprise there.
