On 22 April, ElWanderer.com wrote that one of the most painful legacies of Francis’s pontificate was the bishops he left the Church. In Argentina, Francis appointed 67 bishops, choosing them from among priests who lacked the most basic and essential qualities. On at least three occasions, Francis appointed bishops in Argentina who accepted the nomination but then renounced their consecration weeks later. The rumoured reason was 'skeletons in the closet'. The same happened with the failed Indonesian bishop, Pascalis Syukur: he was chosen as a cardinal by Bergoglio in 2024, gladly accepted the designation, but resigned a few days later. It later emerged that he had been in a romantic relationship with a woman with whom he had two children. It seems likely that Francis appointed bishops from among priests he found personally agreeable or with whom he had some affinity. ElWanderer gives another example. All of the Jesuits who formed the Bergoglian group in the 1980s are now bishops. During …Zaidi

The Vatican is pressing forward with the plan to reshape the Church into a more participatory, consultative body with shared decision-making across multiple levels, according to a report by katholisch.de on April 21. On April 17, the General Secretariat of the Synod convened the XVI Ordinary Council in an online session chaired by Cardinal Mario Grech. The meeting opened with a prayer led by Sister Nathalie Becquart. Council members reviewed progress on implementing the final document of the Synod on Synodality and examined ongoing work by study groups. A key next step will be a preparatory meeting at the Vatican from June 23–25, aimed at translating the Synod’s 2024 conclusions into concrete action at the continental level. This implementation phase is scheduled to run through spring 2028. Participants in June will include leaders of major continental episcopal bodies (CELAM, CCEE, and SECAM) alongside representatives of Eastern Catholic patriarchates and delegations from the bishops …Zaidi
Since legalising euthanasia in 2016, Canada has recorded about 95,000 deaths under the Medical Assistance in Dying programme (MAiD). Starting in 2027, the programme is set to expand further to include people suffering from mental illness. Cardinal Frank Leo of Toronto has appealed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Members of Parliament to block the expansion. He warned of the pressure vulnerable individuals could face, adding: "A society is rightly judged by how it cares for its most vulnerable members."
Cardinal Frank Leo, the metropolitan archbishop of Toronto yesterday sent a letter "to Prime Minister Carney and all federal Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Archdiocese of Toronto asking for their support of Bill C-218 and decrying the rapid expansion of euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada. Bill C-218 is a private members’ bill currently before Parliament that would amend the Criminal Code to prevent Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) from being provided when mental illness is the sole underlying condition. Without this change, MAiD will be available for those suffering from mental illness alone beginning in March 2027." The terrible law itself needs to be stopped. Since euthanasia was legalized in Canada in 2016, over 20,000 Canadians have been killed. Abortion kills 100,000 unborn babies each year, all paid for by Canada Health. Did you know that the yearly number of deaths in Canada will soon surpass the number of births? There is no future of any kind in that coming …

In Malabo, Pope Leo XIV signed the guest book after meeting with civil authorities and diplomats, briefly looking to prepared notes as he wrote. The moment drew lighthearted attention on social media, where some users joked he seemed like “the kind of person who would never cheat on an exam.”
Saint Opportuna - April 22 Saint Opportuna Opportuna of Séez never raised children of her own, but she became known as a mother to the Benedictine nuns she led in eighth-century France. Born in a castle in a small village near Argentan, Normandy, France, Opportuna entered a convent when she was still young. She received the veil from her brother, Bishop Chrodegang of Séez. Her cousin Lantildis was abbess of the convent at the time. Opportuna's faith and kindness stood out, and before long she was chosen to lead the convent as abbess. Displaying great patience, she offered guidance and support as well as gentle correction when needed. She cared for the nuns as their spiritual mother. Her life took a sorrowful turn when her brother, Bishop Chrodegang, was killed on his way to visit her. The man he entrusted to run the diocese while he was in Rome for seven years planned his murder. And even though Opportuna foresaw her brother's death, she was powerless to stop it. Overcome with grief …Zaidi
On today's first anniversary of Francis's death, the homosexual activist James Martin SJ shared a memory from 2024. At the time, Francis had made some negative remarks about homosexual priests using the Italian slur "frociaggine" (faggotry) in a meeting with Italian bishops. A few weeks later, Francis received Fr Martin and discussed the expression. Francis said then that he knew "many holy, faithful, celibate gay priests and seminarians". When Fr Martin suggested proclaiming this publicly, Francis replied, "Oh, but I think I have. And in any event, you can say that!" According to Fr Martin, Francis asked back: "So you're saying that I can say you know many holy, faithful, celibate gay priests and seminarians?" Francis shrugged and said, "Of course. Because I do!" [In reality, the Church has suffered from many unholy, unfaithful, sexually active gay priests.] A few days later, during an audience with comedians, Fr Martin greeted Francis again. The Pope said, "Thank you for our meeting …Zaidi
Gay is an adjective that applies to someone tempted to homosexual sin and is proud of the temptation and acting on the temptation. He or she also encourages others to be proud of their temptations and sins. The specific difference is pride. One who is tempted or sins in a homosexual manner and experiences compunction and repugnance is not gay. Given that definition one cannot be a good gay catholic or a good gay priest. Pride is a vice. It changes a tempted person or sinner who should be ashamed into a vicious monster. Bergoglio's and Martin's ambiguity serves as a smoke screen for contradicting divine revelation and traditional moral doctrine.

In June, the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X will announce the names of the future bishops to be consecrated on 1 July in Ecône, Switzerland. Father Kevin M. Cusick published this rumour on the Rorate-Caeli blog, referring to an anonymous 'reliable source' who claimed that both Don Davide Pagliarani, the Fraternity's Superior General, and Father John Fullerton, the Fraternity's Superior for the US, had confirmed the information. Raymonda Hassan "I'm Jewish. And the truth is, Israel does not represent me." Katie Halper, an American Jewish political commentator, breaks down how Israel was never truly about protecting Jewish people. She explains how it exploited the Holocaust to justify the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, while showing deep contempt for Holocaust survivors and Mizrahi Jews. Halper argues that Zionism internalized antisemitism, tried to erase Jewish communities that spoke Yiddish and Arabic, and built a militarized identity that shamed religious and intellectual Jews. She connects this with how Israel uses claims of antisemitism to silence critics while aligning with Christian Zionists, who believe Jews must die for the apocalypse, and other types of anti-Semites. 253K views · 12K reactions | "I'm Jewish. Amid growing controversy over the future of the Valley of the Fallen, Spain’s Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, has defended Cardinal José Cobo of Madrid. Bolaños told LaSexta.com that the plan to secularise the religious site was not the cardinal's initiative, but the result of an agreement reached directly with the Vatican. He emphasised that no personal deal had been made with Cobo, who has faced significant pressure from Catholics over the issue. The minister also said that the Vatican is fully committed to transforming the Valley from a monastery into a site of "democratic memory". Addressing divisions within the Catholic Church, Bolaños described it as a 'plural organisation', while criticising more traditional sectors that oppose the transformation and suggesting that they are out of step with 'contemporary society'. He also placed the “re-signification” of the Valley within a broader set of negotiations between the Spanish government and the Church, covering issues …Zaidi

Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich, Germany, has instructed priests and pastoral staff to perform "blessings" for homosexual couples and adulterers. A spokesperson confirmed to Die-Tagespost.de on 21 April that all pastoral practice should adhere to the German bishops' guideline, Segen gibt der Liebe Kraft ('Blessing Gives Love Strength'). This guideline is set to become a fundamental element of pastoral work across the Archdiocese of Munich. Training sessions for pastoral staff on how to conduct these "blessing ceremonies" are scheduled to begin in June. No couple seeking a blessing should be turned away. Priests who reject such "blessings" are expected to refer couples to either their dean or other pastoral workers willing to perform them. Furthermore, Cardinal Marx has urged that the "theological meaning" of the guideline be explained, particularly to those who may "still" struggle with the concept of such "blessings". Blessings for same-sex couples are already common practice in …Zaidi
