Growing US Benedictine Nuns Complete Move to Historic English Abbey The Benedictine nuns of the Monastery of Mary, Queen of the Apostles in Gower, Missouri, are set to occupy Colwich Abbey in Staffordshire, England. CatholicHerald.co.uk (21 November) confirmed the purchase. Initially, the nuns set up a temporary residence for European sisters who couldn't get visas, in a makeshift religious house in the family home of an English sister. The nuns follow the Old Latin Rite liturgy. As a result, they have grown rapidly. After outgrowing their mother convent in Gower, they expanded into another in Ava, in the same state. 882-Year-Old Abbey in Ireland Closes - Immigrants Take Over The three male Cistercian monasteries in Ireland - Mount Melleray Abbey (diocese of Waterford and Lismore), Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea (diocese of Killaloe), and Mellifont Abbey (diocese of Armagh) - will close in January. They will be merged into one community, initially based at Mount Saint Joseph Abbey in Roscrea. The future monastery will seek another location and will be called Our Lady of Silence. It begins with twenty-six members, three of whom are novices. The decision to close the monasteries was made because of the decline in vocations and the aging of the communities. It was approved by the Cistercian Order on November 22. The Cistercians were first established in Ireland in 1142 on the initiative of St Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh.
