Bishop Schneider: Catholics Can Attend "Pious" Novus Ordo Eucharists

The position of Catholics to never attend a Novus Ordo Eucharist "is not correct", Bishop Athanasius Schneider told OnePeterFive.com (January 1).
"If the new Mass can be celebrated 'reverently', it is not heretical."
During his time as a religious priest in his Community of the Holy Cross, the Novus Ordo Eucharist was celebrated in Latin, turned towards the Lord (versus Deum), with Holy Communion received kneeling on the tongue, with the Roman Canon and Gregorian chant.
"I don't see why you cannot assist such a pious Mass."
However, by now, Novus-Ordo Eucharists of this kind are even rarer than Holy Masses in the Roman Rite.

Look warm bishop

I disagree with the good bishop. The Novus Ordo is protestantized, even when said with the best of intentions. It's the real Mass or nothing for me.

Archbishop Lefebvre’s advice to his seminarians:
Make every effort to have the Mass of St. Pius V, but if it is impossible to find one within forty kilometers and if there is a pious priest who says the New Mass in as traditional a way as possible, it is good for you to assist at it to fulfill your Sunday obligation."
The same advice as that of Bishop Schneider.

K R Ross

This is not his position. Sorry.
Proof? Post the document in his handwriting please. He never had anything typed. He never sent an email. I will recognize his handwriting immediately. He wrote his private responses on little "billets," never on "normal sized" foolscap paper unless he was writing a response to the Vatican. Also, he always wrote in French as his written English was not fluent enough for him to write confidently in...Your supposed quote is in English. Original in French please.

The quote of his is taken from the sspx.org website:
What Archbishop Lefebvre said about the New Mass

Denis Efimov

It is inappropriate to even ask about the admissibility of anything Second Vatican. Together with this council, a new church was created, which for 60 years continued to move away from the Catholic Church and Faith at a high speed. Today, these are completely different religions, different planets, different worlds. They are even hypothetically irreconcilable and incompatible. In some things the difference between the Catholic Faith and the faith of the conciliar-synodal church is even greater than between the Catholic Faith and protestantism. So what are we talking about?

K R Ross

Abp. Lefebvre's position on Mass attendance to fulfill our Sunday obligation was that it is better to stay at home, and piously follow the TLM in one's missal than to attend the New Mass and risk being infected by modernism and by irreverence at the local parish. He also said that if the pope had suppressed the Latin, and changed the TLM to the vernacular only, with no other changes other than translation, then out of obedience, without being happy about it, he would have submitted to this BUT Abp. Lefebvre never submitted to the Novus Ordo, directly or indirectly, whether in Latin, or the vernacular, whether said by a pious priest, or a modernist one. "Vade retro Satanas" was his response.

Credo .

Listening to all these 'weathervane' Clerics is worse than listening to a 100 bells at the same time; enough to become deaf and dumb, if we don't rely on the 'solidity of true Faith' in Tradition!

Harry Jones

Bp. Schneider is most likely correct. I cannot see any objection. Moreover Abp. Lefebvre allowed his seminarians to attend the NO Mass during their summer break, so I don’t see the issue.

K R Ross

No, he did not.

Harry Jones

Yes he did, “ if one does not have the choice and if the priest celebrating Mass according to the Novus Ordo is faithful and worthy, one should not abstain from going to Mass.”

Say NO to the NO
Find the True Mass of our Fathers.

Which one? That one which was celebrated behind the icons?

Bishop Schneider is wrong: St. Matthew V: 37 "Let your word be Yes for Yes, and No for No; whatever goes beyond this, comes from the evil one."
The assertion that a priest's subjective piety determines the validity or liceity of the Mass that the faithful may attend as a result is erroneous and contrary to established Catholic doctrine.
I. The Source of Sacramental Power:
Christ as the Unique Great High Priest:
It is Christ Himself who is the Priest in every sacrament, acting through the ordained priest as His instrument. The priest "stands in the Person of Christ" when he offers Holy Mass. The priest's personal holiness (or lack thereof) does not impede Christ's action. This is the teaching of the Church against the Donatist heresy which held that the validity of sacraments depended on the worthiness of the minister.
Objective Validity (Ex Opere Operato): The sacraments confer grace "ex opere operato", meaning "by the very fact of the action's being performed." Provided the proper traditional matter (the physical element used, e.g., bread and wine), traditional form (the rite used and the words spoken by the priest), and intention (the priest's intention to do what the Church does) are present, the sacrament is objectively valid, regardless of the minister's personal state. The New Mass is valid but illicit as sacrilegious due to the intentional adulteration of the traditional Latin Mass by Archbishop Bugnini, a freemason. Regardless of the subjective personal piety of the priest, objectively, in the eyes of God, the New Mass is always displeasing worship offered to God.
Against Tertullian's Error: Albeit a sacrilege for the cleric, a priest in the state of occult mortal sin, who offers the True Holy Traditional Latin Mass, offers a valid Mass that is pleasing to God, and the faithful may attend, and must attend to fulfill their Sunday obligation. It is Christ who offers himself on the Cross once again, to His Father in Heaven. Christ is Holy even if and when his sinful earthly priest is not. It is better, therefore, to attend the Traditional Latin Mass offered by the most sinful traditional priest, who is under no ecclesiastical censure, than to attend the Novus Ordo Mass offered by the most pious, holy conciliar priest who enjoys the accolades of all.
II. Liceity and the Novus Ordo Missae:
Validity vs. Liceity:
It is crucial to distinguish between validity and liceity. A sacrament can be valid (truly confecting the sacrament) but illicit (unlawful, or forbidden, or sacrilegious according to Church doctrine and law).
The Traditional Latin Mass: The Traditional Latin Mass is undoubtedly the only valid and licit expression of the Roman Rite and the only Roman Rite Mass that is pleasing to God. There are other traditional rites that are pleasing to God in the Western Church ie. Mozarabic, Milanese, Dominican, Carthusian, etc. It has been offered by the Church for centuries, has produced countless canonized saints, miraculous stigmata, and levitations, Eucharistic miracles, and enjoys the full authority of all the popes, Fathers of the Church, Church Doctors, Theologians, and Ecumenical Councils of the Tradition up until the "1789" in the Church aka Vatican II, per Cardinal Suenens.
The Novus Ordo Missae: The question of the liceity of the Novus Ordo Missae is simple. It was written by six Protestant 'periti' in thirty minutes in a Roman restaurant under the supervision of Archbishop Bugnini, freemason. Although valid, its rubrics and theology represent a departure from traditional Catholic teaching and practice, thus rendering this pseudo-rite illicit.
Why is the New Mass displeasing to God? The Ottaviani Intervention states: "The Novus Ordo represents, both as a whole and in its details, a striking departure from the Catholic theology of the Mass as it was formulated in Session XXII of the Council of Trent. The "canons" of the rite definitively fixed at that time provided an insurmountable barrier to any heresy directed against the integrity of the Mystery." St. Pius V anathematized anyone who dared to substantially change the immemorial Roman Rite of the Mass. This is why the New Mass is sacrilegious, and why it never offers pleasing worship to God regardless of validity.
III. The Importance of the Traditional Mass:
Ex Opere Operato and Disposition:
While the sacraments work ex opere operato, the recipient's disposition also plays a crucial role in the reception of grace. A well-disposed recipient receives more abundant graces.
The Power of the Traditional Mass: Many believe the Traditional Latin Mass, with its emphasis on reverence, sacrifice, and clear expression of Catholic doctrine, is uniquely suited to foster proper dispositions in both the priest and the faithful, leading to a more fruitful reception of grace. This is not to say the Novus Ordo cannot be celebrated reverently and fruitfully, but that the structure and prayers of the Traditional Mass are inherently ordered to this end.
IV. Conclusion:
The validity of the Mass depends on Christ's action through the priest, using the proper matter and form with the right intention, not on the priest's subjective piety. However, the liceity of the liturgical rite and the disposition of the participants significantly impact the fruitfulness of the Mass. Thus, while a valid Mass is offered regardless of the priest's personal state of grace (excluding defect of intention), the Traditional Latin Mass is considered by many to be objectively more conducive to proper dispositions and a richer experience of the sacred mysteries. This argument rests not on the priest's subjective piety, but on the objective qualities of the rite itself.
This response demonstrates, hypothetically, why attending the True Holy Mass offered by a priest in the state of hidden mortal sin is preferential to attending the Novus Ordo. It focuses on the objective qualities of the traditional rite and the pseudo-rite instead of on the subjective dispositions of the priest or faithful. It also uses the comparison of "si, si, non, non", and focuses on clarifying the distinctions between validity, liceity, and fruitfulness which many people are not aware of, or are confused about. It uses the language and concepts of St. Thomas Aquinas (matter, form, intention, ex opere operato) to provide a sound Catholic theological basis for the argument.

Notions concerning the NO Mass are likely the very most absurd held by many Trads.
While perhaps illicit, the NO Mass is valid. Our Lord is there. Our Lord is sacrificed. It's not about you, it's about Him. If anything, consolation offered to Him may mean more during a NO Mass than during a TLM.
If one believes attending a NO Mass may damage their faith, they might well ponder whether they actually have any.

Simply not true. The way of doing the Liturgy can erode or enrich your Faith depending how it is done. Do not be crossing your wires with instrinsic merit of a Mass and extrinsic because Lex orandi lex credendi applies.. I go to receive Holy Communion at my local N.O. Church all the time without attending the ritual because it is torture. When you know what you know you cannot bear something that is a lesser product objectively speaking.

philosopher

Both have valid points. The NO is inherently valid, and Bishop Schneider has recently become an informal student of Archbishop Lefebvre stating that he was correct that liberalism and modernism has infected the Church on many levels, especially the liturgy, however, even Lefebvre allowed his seminarians at Escone in the first few years to attend a Latin, ad Orientum, NO Mass offered by a pius monk near the seminary. These masses are sometimes referred to as a unicorn mass b/c they are so few and are outliers among the typical NO. The typical NO with all of the modernist accutriments does affect one's faith as the atmosphere is anthropomorphic and worldly, focusing on illiciting a subjective response based on emotivism. This can erode one's faith, but a NO conducted in the way Bishop Schnieder describes does emphasize the Holy Sacrifice, the Sacred, and Transcendence of God, and is in no way harmful to the faith!
Good luck finding one.

In these times of great apostasy and wolves in shepherds clothes - the priest is what matters. I’d rather go to a NO with a good priest than TLM with a bad priest.

Maria delos Angeles

Fr Ripperger cited 6 points as extrinsic merit of a Mass of which the holiness of the clergy /hierarchy was one of those

I am taking about their office and how they go about it. Covid revealed how weak the faith is even among TLM priests and many, many heretical priests leading the flock astray.

The N.O. can lead to Catholics losing their Catholic faith. Anything made up by a committee is dangerous to the faith.

Lizzy67

So true! I attended a few committee meetings in the past and there were many opinions by lay people about how things should go..looking back they should not have had so much power. The priest back then always stressed the Mass as a big celebration..a ‘big meal’ .I feel so blessed to attend a TLM Mass ..where now I feel honoured to be going to Calvary at each Mass and lay people are not ‘taking over’ the liturgy. Many people who attend the N.O. don’t know any better.and most do not have a Latin Mass to attend.if they did which is very sad.

they CAN but SHOULD they?

A Novus Ordo should not be "pious". The Mass should be pious. Full stop.

All Saints

Doesn’t matter if it is said ad orientem, entirely in Latin, no altar girls or eucharistic abusers and the priest is in a fiddleback. It is still a Freemason-designed and approved Protestant “worship” service. Would not fulfill my Sunday obligation.

Koza Nutria

Will not fulfil your obligation becuse you decided so, very Catholic thing to say.

V.R.S.

Yeah, a pious revolution - perhaps: piously revolting against centuries of the venerable Roman Latin rite in the name of Religious Liberty, Anthropocentric & Collegial Egality and Pseudo-ecumenical Fraternity. And all under the most pious ambitions of Brother Buan, the notorious creator of the Novus Ordo.
