In Memoriam ~ Lycourgos Angelopoulos, 1941-2014
The great master of Byzantine Music, Lycourgos Angelopoulos, reposed in the Lord, last Sunday, May 18th, 2014. He was a man of great faith, knowledge, talent and wisdom, as well as a uniquely joyous, friendly and generous person. He was famous all around the world for his work, and loved and cherished by the multitude of his pupils. I'm extremely proud of the fact that I helped, even in the very least, his voice, and those of his students and colleagues in the Greek Byzantine Choir to be heard around the globe through this channel. He was my master and mentor... and I am eternally grateful that I was given the privilege of meeting him and being his pupil. Χριστός Ανέστη, Δάσκαλε. Καλό Παράδεισο και καλή αντάμωση... Title: "Αινείται το Κύριον εκ των ουρανών" (Praise the Lord from the heavens) - Koinonikon Performers: +Lycourgos Angelopoulos & the Greek Byzantine Choir Photography by Ioannis Panousakis

Christmas carol - Coventry Carol.
Christmas carol from England. Title: "Coventry carol" Performers: Moat Jumper (www.moatjumper.com) Album: Christmas at the Renaissance Fair (www.cdbaby.com/moatjumper) ~ Although I generally post liturgical music, it was my great pleasure to make this clip of renaissance festive carol, at the kind request of Moat Jumper group. I am a great fan of medieval and renaissance music and, as the festive season draws closer, I thought it a great opportunity to make this post ~ The "Coventry Carol" is a Christmas carol dating from the 16th century. The carol was performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew. The carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod orders all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. The lyrics of this haunting carol represent a mother's lament for her doomed child …More

Chant of Grottaferrata - Το πνεύμα σου το αγαθόν οδηγήσει με.
Medieval Byzantine Chant from the Basilian Monastery of Grottaferrata. Title: "Κοινωνικόν: Το πνεύμα σου το αγαθόν οδηγήσει με" (Communion chant) Performers: Cappella Romana Album: "Byzantium in Rome - Medieval Byzantine Chant from Grottaferrata" ~ The Basilian Monastery of the Mother of God (Theotokos) was founded by St Nilus the Younger in the town of Grottaferrata, 20 km south of Rome, in 1004. It was a Byzantine Rite abbey following the Rule of St Basil and was (uncommonly) under the See of Rome and remained so after the Great Schism. Two of its abbots, St Nilus the Younger and St Bartholomew the Younger, are saints of both the Latin and the Greek Church as they both died before the schism. In later years one of its most illustrious abbots in commendam was Cardinal Bessarion, himself a Basilian monk. From the day of its foundation to modern times the Monastery has remained in Byzantine rite, despite being so near to Rome …More
