St Benedict of Norcia (480-547 AD) did not invent monastic life but organised it in his Rule. In chapters eight to twenty, and also chapters 43, 47, 52, 58 he gave detailed rules for the Ora part of the ‘Ora et Labora’ which Benedictines live by.
