On this day in 1942, Wojciech Nierychlewski, a Polish friar was brutally murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz. He was washed in cold water, chased naked through the snow, forced into hot shower & poured over with icy water and was later shot to death.
I think his name would be pronounced something like Voicheck Nearaklevski.
@Phil Homer I know a Priest who shares the same first name, and that's almost the same as he pronounces it, although maybe spelling it phonetically as VOY-chieck might make it more obvious.
What an incredible martyrdom....!!! Can't imagine the strength that took.
Great Martyr .. would like to add him to my litany of Saints and martyrs .. don’t know how to pronounce his name .. will have to say the Polish Friar and remember what they did to him on this day Feb7,1942.Please pray for all who are suffering under tyranny in this world! I try to pray daily the (Tridentine 1570) Laudes (divinumofficium.com); this often includes Canticum Trium Puerorum. I find this canticle to be a great meditation on the humility and joy of all martyrs.
