Ilhan Omar being raided by a division of ICE on Columbus Day is hysterical
Columbus absolutely did "discover America" if you understand the provenance of the word. We probably should say "the Americas" to clarify this statement nowadays, as we use "America" to refer to the United States. Education is not her strong point.
German Bishop: Laypeople Preach in My Diocese — and I Won’t Sanction Them
The Vatican's reasoning for the ban on lay preaching is "not entirely consistent," Bishop Peter Kohlgraf of Mainz told Katholisch.de on August 11.
"The letter from the Prefect for Liturgy states that only the priest celebrating Mass may preach. But taken to its logical conclusion, that would mean a concelebrating priest or an assisting deacon shouldn't be allowed to preach either."
Lay Preaching Is No Problem
In the Diocese of Mainz, occasional lay preaching has become an established practice and Bishop Kohlgraf has no intention of changing that.
In some parishes, "it is customary for laypeople to preach," he said. "If I hear about it, I won't take disciplinary action or impose canonical sanctions."
"Denunciations" Are a Problem
Bishop Kohlgraf is concerned that the directive from Rome could encourage "denunciations": "There are people who report liturgical violations straight to the bishop and write directly to …

Even a blind squirrel will find a nut every once in a while. So the Prefect for Liturgy is careless to the point of being goofy. But what self-respecting Catholic, much less a bishop, can use this for an excuse?
Leo XIV' New Consultors for Dicastery for Religious Life Are Liberal, Synodal "Reformers"
On August 6, Pope Leo XIV appointed 15 new consultors to the Dicastery for Religious, headed by Prefect Sr Simona Brambilla. The new consultors comprise two bishops (Alfonso Vincenzo Amarante and Kevin Otieno Mwandha), five priests, including one abbot (Ignasi Fossas, Damián Astigueta, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Benjamin Earl and Flavien Mambueni), two religious brothers (Antoine Kazindu and Emili Turú), and six religious sisters (Chiara Lorenzato, Maria Nirmalini, María Rosaura González Casas, Mary Lembo, Patricia Murray and Maria do Disterro Rocha Santos).
Leo XIV has again appointed liberal, synodal figures, illustrated by these four personnel choices.
Less Uniformity in Liturgy, More Creativity
Indian Sister Maria Nirmalini, A.C. was a member of the Synod on Synodality (2023) and hoped for “liturgical reform, particularly of the Mass with less emphasis on uniformity and more on creativity.”

Patriarch Kirill Scraps Hilarion's Brazil Posting, Reassigns Him to Monastery
The Russian Orthodox Church has revoked its June decision assigning its former foreign affairs chief to two Russian Orthodox parishes in southern Brazil.
Instead, Patriarch Kirill has assigned Hilarion, 60, to the Exaltation of the Cross Monastery near Moscow.
The latest reassignment comes after a series of controversies involving the once-powerful church diplomat.
In May, Czech police detained Hilarion in Karlovy Vary after searching his car and finding four containers containing a white powder. Czech authorities later identified the substance as cocaine. Hilarion was released without charges after two days, while the investigation remains ongoing. He denies any involvement and says he was the victim of a provocation.
Hilarion had already been removed as Metropolitan of Budapest and Hungary in 2024 after a former male assistant accused him of homosexual misconduct and financial impropriety. The allegations …
"The allegations were accompanied by claims that Hilarion lived a lavish lifestyle and accumulated significant cash and property."
So? Did he take a vow of poverty? Stick to the topic, which is lurid enough.
Or shall we speak of the German and Austrian Latin hierarchy ... ?
65% of Cardinals Know No Latin – Lack Any Real Qualifications
Over 65% of the current College of Cardinals does not know any Latin, writes Francesco Capozza, Vatican journalist for IlTempo.it, on Facebook (August 4): “This is the extremely serious legacy of Bergoglio (Pope Francis), who has given the Church cardinals who are ignorant, lacking any real qualifications or merit, and unaware that Latin is the official language of the Church.”
The figure sounds plausible, but Capozza does not publish any documentation to support it. He says he conducted research over several months and consulted seminaries, universities, religious congregations, and others.
Capozza adds that most of these cardinals do not even speak English, but only their native language.
He concludes: “This is the Church of today, and if Leo XIV does not clean house, the outcome will be an even greater disaster than the previous twelve years.”

Good grief, I started to study Latin in high school in the rough part of town. And other languages, too. Dare we ask about the cardinals' abilities in Greek? Hebrew?
German Archbishop: Homosexual March Is "Joyful and Moving Celebration"
Berlin’s homosex march 'Christopher Street Day' is a “joyful and moving celebration.” That is what pro-homosexual Archbishop Heiner Koch of Berlin told KNA on Sunday. He spoke after an attack on the march on Saturday evening.
One woman was killed, and at least 31 others were injured, some of them seriously.
The attacker, Abdul B., 21, drove a car into the crowd and was later - conveniently for the justice system and politicians - shot dead during a police operation.
The full context of Archbishop Koch's statement is: "How terrible! To brutally destroy such a joyful and moving celebration. We keep all the victims, their families, friends, and everyone whose joy has been taken away by hatred in our prayers. Hatred must not prevail."

The paradox being that in Austria (as well as in Germany) the Church as an institution receives way too much money. This is an exciting novelty for them to play at being poor, complete with a kiddy stole.

Italian Archbishop Proposes Women "Co-Preside" at the Novus Ordo
Worse than Germany: Archbishop Erio Castellucci of Modena-Nonantola has proposed a form of liturgical "co-presidency" in which women would lead the Liturgy of the Word while priests would preside over the Eucharistic consecration.
The proposal appears in a speech published on May 24 in the diocesan bulletin, delivered at a conference organized by the Centro Italiano Femminile in Carpi.
Monsignor Castellucci is the vice President of the Italian bishops and President of the National Committee for the Italian Synod.
He suggested that women could take responsibility for the first part of the Eucharist, proclaiming the Resurrection "as Mary Magdalene did to the apostles." This would sidestep "the impasse" over women's ordination while still respecting Church teaching that only a priest can consecrate.
Archbishop Castellucci also called for expanding shared governance in the Church, proposing that consultative councils' …
Women already "preside" over the Ordinary Form Liturgy of the Word, including facing and waving their arms at the assembly. Is he talking about women wearing purposely ambiguous vestments to wander about the sanctuary, which they already do in Germany, then haranguing the hapless congregation in a homily as to why they are there when there is in fact a priest in the sanctuary ... behind them ?

Talking God: Raising a Child in a Faith I'm Estranged From - Busted Halo
My grandmother was a devout Catholic. She thought it was important to instill those traditions in me at a young age, so whenever I spent time with her, we did all the Catholic things I didn’t do at home, such as going to Mass on Sundays and saying grace before meals. My father, who I lived with, didn’t believe in anything spiritual but never explained to me why.
When I turned 12, I began to slowly question all organized religions, and over the following years, drifted away from the Church more. So when my own son turned the same age and showed a newfound interest in Catholicism, I was surprised.
I had always held onto the comforting traditions that my grandmother introduced me to. I loved going to Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning Mass with her, and saying nightly prayers on my own was something I never let go of. These were great comforts to me, and so when I had my son, I passed these traditions on to him.

Recently discovered Cardinal Fernández essay reveals his belief that all are saved | Sign of the Cross Media

(LifeSiteNews) — The future Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández blatantly endorsed universalism, or the idea that all are saved, in a recently uncovered paper written more than 30 years ago.
In a 46-page 1995 essay titled “Romanos 9-11: gracia y predestinación” (Grace and Predestination) first reported by El Wanderer, the future Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith wrote extensively on the Church’s teaching on salvation and predestination, citing the works Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, though the then-priest focused on what they wrote on God’s mercy while largely ignoring His justice. Ultimately, Fernández concluded his work by stressing that he “firmly trusts” that “everyone will be saved,” adding that this is not a “mere wish” but based on what he “know(s) of God and His specific plans.”

No surprise. It will not change any opinions of him.
I am only surprised by how seamless a transition was made from Fran, who hated Catholics with the heat of a thousand suns (but never, for the luck of the Anglican Use, could figure it out) and had to be "elected" fraudulently, to Pope Leo. I suppose most revolutions take place in less than twelve years.
Who gets what?
I am not a lay adherent of the SSPX, but I have to say that I feel sympathy for them when I see how they are treated by fellow Catholics. It sets off all my "whatabouts."
Leo Sends Final Warning to SSPX Urging Society Not to Proceed with Consecrations
News broke a while ago that Leo XIV has sent a letter to the Superior General of the SSPX, Davide Pagliarani, urging the fraternity of traditional priests not to proceed with the planned episcopal consecrations due to take place in Écône tomorrow (July 1).
The letter, which seems like a half-hearted and dishonest attempt to maintain the appearance of desiring a solution, is dated June 29.
One striking detail in the letter is the fact that it is addressed not only to Pagliarani, the bishops, priests, and seminarians of the Society, but also to the faithful who attend its Masses. This is an important detail in light of rumors that the laity who attend SSPX Masses will also be designated schismatic by the Vatican and therefore excommunicated.
