Pope Leo XIV Will Declare Cardinal Newman 'Doctor of the Church'
Leo XIV today confirmed the Congregation for the Causes of Saints' affirmative opinion regarding the conferral of the title of Doctor of the Universal Church to the English Saint John Henry Newman (1801–1890).
The decision was made during an audience with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
The title 'Doctor of the Church' was introduced in its current form in the 2nd millennium and has since been used inflationary.
Cardinal Newman was a renowned theologian and convert from Anglicanism who founded the English Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. He was created a cardinal in 1879.
His most notable work is An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), which he wrote during his conversion from Anglicanism to Catholicism. In it, he introduced the concept that Christian doctrine matures organically, like a living idea, rather than being static.

"Today the Holy Father’s clinical conditions have remained stable [=serious].
He did not have any episodes of respiratory insufficiency or bronchospasm.
He remained apyretic, always alert, cooperative with therapies, and oriented.
This morning he passed to high-flow oxygen therapy [through a nasal cannula] and carried out respiratory physiotherapy.
Tonight, as planned [when?], non-invasive mechanical ventilation [through a mask] will be resumed, until tomorrow morning.
The prognosis remains reserved.
During the day he alternated prayer and rest, and this morning he received the Eucharist."

A lot of us Catholics have been weirded out by President Trump's closeness to Catholic culture. We couldn't figure out where it came from. Last year, he wished the Virgin Mary a happy birthday. He tweeted an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He issued praise for All Saints Day.
But it's not explainable as a mere campaign tactic to win the Catholic vote, which he did indeed win. It continued after his election, with Trump inviting a Catholic priest who is well-known as an exorcist to pay a visit to Mar-a-Lago. And then he went to the re-opening of Paris's Notre Dame cathedral.
Speculation has been rife that perhaps it's the influence of Melania, who's a Catholic of sorts, albeit probably not a significantly practicing one. Others say it's J.D. Vance, a Catholic convert, or any of the huge number of Catholics in his cabinet. As I wrote here on this puzzling matter last month:

The International Association of Exorcists (AIE), which represents 900 members worldwide, has issued a warning on January 8 against charlatans and unauthorized practices.
Some [unnamed] persons are performing exorcisms on their own authority, without the necessary training or without authorization from the responsible Novus Ordo bishop: "Some of these people even advise the faithful not to go to the official exorcist of the respective diocese".
The association also criticizes the use of esoteric or New Age practices that have infiltrated some exorcism circles. Such methods are "theologically wrong and promote a magical way of thinking contrary to the true faith".
Doctors and psychologists should be involved in order to rule out natural causes of suffering.

Report Confirms More Than $5 Billion Spent On U.S. Sex Abuse Allegations
Over two decades, Catholic dioceses, eparchies and men’s religious communities spent more than $5 billion on allegations of sexual abuse of minors, according to a new report released Wednesday (Jan. 15) by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University.
Between 2004 and 2023, three-fourths of the $5.025 billion reported was paid to abuse victims. Seventeen percent went to pay attorneys’ fees, 6% was in support for alleged abusers and 2% went toward other costs. On average, only 16% of the costs related to the allegations was borne by insurance companies.
The CARA report combined 20 annual surveys sent to dioceses and eparchies within the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (which excludes some parts of the U.S., such as Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa), as well as U.S. religious communities belonging to the Conference of Major Superiors of Men. Vatican Cracks Down On Illegal Entry Into Its Territory
The Vatican City State has toughened sanctions for those who try to illegally enter its territory in areas where free access is not allowed.
In a decree issued last month by the Holy See, the monetary sanctions and prison sentences for those who violate the strict security regulations of Vatican City have been considerably increased.
The document, signed by Cardinal Fernando Vérguez Alzaga, president of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State, provides for monetary fines ranging from 10,000 to 25,000 euros (about $10,200 to $25,700) and prison sentences ranging from one to four years.
These fines will apply especially to those who enter by means of violence, threats, or deception, bypassing border controls or security systems. In addition, those who enter with expired permits or do not meet the established requirements will receive administrative sanctions ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 euros (about $2,060 to $5,145).
