Solesmes Abbot Proposes Changes to Roman Rite that Resemble Novus Ordo
Abbot Geoffroy Kemlin of the Abbey Saint-Pierre, Solesmes, France, has proposed to insert the old Latin Mass into the current Roman Missal, creating one missal containing two forms. The Novus Ordo should remain unchanged.
He has sent his proposal in a letter to Leo XIV on November 12, 2025.
Abbot Kemlin explicitly frames this as a response to the global liturgical dispute (including France, United States, England, Germany) and an effort to restore unity in the Church.
He admits that the two forms reflect different “anthropologies” and ways of prayer and Catholics attached to the old rite are unlikely to adopt the new one.
His proposal speaks of "minimal" revisions of the old Latin Mass. However, his changes would be far-reaching: allowing vernacular language, use of new lectionary, possible concelebration, integration into a single calendar, and additional Eucharistic prayers.

Synod Study on Women Calls for "Redefining" Holy Orders
The Synod Secretariat today released the report of Study Group 5, which examined the role of women in the Church.
The report calls for the expansion of existing instituted ministries for women including lector, acolyte, catechist as well as leadership roles in communities, dioceses and Vatican institutions.

- It is necessary to reflect particularly on reformulating the areas of competence of ordained ministry […] Redefining these areas of competence could open recognition of new spaces of responsibility for women in the Church. (page 12)

On 2 February, Leo XIV appointed Monsignor Krzysztof Zadarko as the new Bishop of Koszalin–Kołobrzeg.

Catholic Decline in Latin America - Paganism Flourishes
The share of adults identifying as Catholic has declined sharply across much of Latin America over the past decade. The number of people with no religious affiliation has risen, according to a January 21 Pew Research Center report. This marks a shift in a region where more than 90% of people were Catholic around 1900.
The report, Catholicism Has Declined in Latin America Over the Past Decade is based on surveys of more than 6,200 adults in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru conducted in spring 2024. Comparing the results with a similar 2013–14 survey, Pew found that the Catholic share fell by at least 9 percentage points in all six countries.

The Archdiocese of Madrid promotes the so-called Convivium process, an official diocesan consultation involving clergy, parishes, religious communities and lay groups in Madrid, Spain.

13% of a U.S. Diocese Try "Ad Orientem" Eucharists
Throughout 2025, Bishop Daniel Felton of Duluth, Minnesota, has "permitted" nine parishes in the diocese to celebrate the Eucharist ad orientem, with the priest and congregation facing the same direction.
The "permissions" were granted following requests from parish priests and on a trial basis.
Bishop Felton began with an instruction issued in 2024. He wrote that celebrating the Eucharist facing the pews has been widely adopted in the Church since the Second Vatican Council. He added that some Catholics believe this posture has resulted in a loss of 'a sense of transcendence'. Bishop Felton required that both liturgical postures be treated with mutual respect. Priests had to explain their motivations for celebrating ad orientem to him personally and consult their parishioners beforehand.
The frequency of the posture varied by parish. Some communities celebrated ad orientem every Sunday, while others did so once a month.

“Our Bishop didn’t just close and sell our church. He swindled parishioners into paying for what turned out to be capital improvements to make the sale more lucrative,” wrote Kevin DiCamillo on CrisisMagazine.com on December 31.
DiCamillo recounts the closure and sale of St. Raphael’s Parish in Niagara Falls, New York, describing what he believes was a serious breach of trust by Bishop Michael Fisher of the Diocese of Buffalo.

At today’s presentation of the sexual psychology document Una caro. Elogio della monogamia, Tucho Fernández linked celibacy with abuse, reports German agency KNA.
A priest cannot expect to fill his feelings of loneliness with another person, he said, noting that this can give rise to abuse: "I have to resolve my feelings of emptiness, loneliness, and psychological problems in other ways."
For decades, many experts have pointed out that there is no evidence that celibate men are more likely to be pedophiles than the general male population. Psychologists and criminologists also emphasize that celibacy itself does not increase the likelihood of pedophilic tendencies [but how about porn?].
