El Papa León XIV ha inscrito a San John Henry Newman en el Calendario Romano General, estableciendo su memoria facultativa el 9 de octubre, día de su conversión al catolicismo en 1845. También lo proclama ejemplo para el mundo educativo.

John Henry Newman C.O. (Londres, 21 de febrero de 1801-Birmingham, 11 de agosto de 1890) fue un teólogo, académico, filósofo, historiador, escritor y poeta católico inglés. Anteriormente fue presbítero anglicano y se convirtió al catolicismo en 1845, y como miembro del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, fue más tarde elevado a la dignidad de cardenal por el papa León XIII. Fue una figura importante y controvertida en la historia religiosa de Inglaterra en el siglo XIX y era ya conocido a nivel nacional a mediados de la década de 1830. Fue beatificado por el papa Benedicto XVI el 19 de septiembre de 2010 durante su visita al Reino Unido. Su canonización fue aprobada oficialmente por el papa Francisco el 13 de febrero de 2019 y se llevó a cabo el 13 de octubre del mismo año. El 31 de julio de 2025, el papa León XIV anunció que le conferiría el título de Doctor de la Iglesia, hecho que tuvo lugar el 1 de noviembre del mismo año.

Pope Leo XIV has inscribed St. John Henry Newman, Doctor of the Church, in the General Roman Calendar, with his optional memorial being on October 9, announced the Dicastery of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in a decree released on Tuesday, February 3.
The 19th-century English-born former Anglican priest, who converted to Catholicism and then became a Cardinal, was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2019.
On November 1, 2025, Pope Leo proclaimed him co-Patron of the Church’s educational mission, along with St. Thomas Aquinas, and a Doctor of the Church.
