Nigerian Archbishop: Terrible Influence of Pentecostalism
"We will strongly resist the terrible influences of Pentecostalism that are trying to violate our Catholic identity and values," Archbishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, 66, of Abuja, Nigeria, told ACI Africa (September 6).
He added: "We are going to work very seriously in every diocese to know which priest is walking in accordance with the Catholic traditions and practices, and which priests are looking for money and popularity."
As has been the case for decades in South America, the growing influence of Pentecostalism in Africa is leading Catholics away from the Eucharist and toward healing vigils and Protestant megachurches.
