Nephew of Monsignor Carlo Maria Viganò Becomes Archbishop
Monsignor Polvani will be promoted to the rank of Bishop, with the personal title of Archbishop.
He is the son of the sister of Monsignor Carlo Maria Viganò.
FaroDiRoma.it (12 January) recalls that in 2012 Monsignor Polvani got into trouble in the Vatileaks trial.
According to FaroDiRoma.it, Vatileaks was triggered by Monsignor Viganò's letter of protest against his transfer to the United States. Benedict XVI made Viganò nuncio in Washington in order to remove him as secretary general of the Governatorato, because in this function Viganò had dug up too much dirt.
At the time, Mgr Polvani was head of the Information Office of the Secretariat of State. He was accused by the computer technician Claudio Sciarpelletti (who was given a very light sentence and later pardoned by Pope Francis) of having given him an envelope with incriminating documents to give to Paolo Gabriele, the famous chamber assistant of Benedict XVI who had started the whole affair.
Gabriele, however, declared in court that it was he who had given the material to the computer scientist and that Polvani had nothing to do with it.
After these troubles, Polvani ended up in the Department of Culture and then, after the changes in the Curia, became Undersecretary for Culture and Education, of which he is now Secretary.
