A rare glimpse of Veronica’s Veil at St. Peter’s Basilica
On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, also known as Passion Sunday, a hush falls over St. Peter’s Basilica as the Church of Rome gathers for the ancient Station Church liturgy. Within that solemn silence, something rare and deeply moving unfolds: the public display of Veronica’s Veil. Bound forever to the mystery of the Cross, the veil recalls the tender moment when Veronica stepped from the crowd to wipe the face of Christ on His sorrowful road to Calvary. Tradition says that in that act of compassion, His holy image was left upon the cloth–the vera icon, the “true image.” Guarded for centuries among the Church’s most treasured relics of the Passion, the veil has drawn pilgrims since the Middle Ages, stirring prayer, wonder, and tears. As the liturgy begins, clergy and faithful move in solemn procession through the basilica, their prayers rising with the Litany of the Saints. Then, beneath Bernini’s Baldacchino, the sacred moment arrives. Bells ring. Vexilla Regis fills the air. The relic is lifted high and turned toward every side, as if offering the faithful one fleeting, merciful gaze upon the face of Christ. On a Sunday when sacred images are veiled, this unveiling feels all the more piercing: a final, tender vision of the Lord’s face as the Church prepares to contemplate the mystery of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
