Catholic priest breaks his celibacy and will continue to practice without being sanctioned
The Archdiocese of Miami said one of its priests had a son.
Father Chanel Jeanty, pastor of Saint James Catholic Church in North Miami, learned last month that he had a son.
The archdiocese said the boy was conceived in a relationship that ended more than a year ago.
Father Jeanty has since reached out to the mother and plans to help support the child.
The archdiocese said in a statement that Jeanty will continue to serve and seek forgiveness from her parishioners.
I live in this Archdiocese, and I attend an SSPX chapel which is about to start building a larger chapel soon. Thanks be to God that the local buffoonery down here hasn’t gone to waste - it’s opened the eyes of many devout Catholics.
"In Frank's Church..." @Les Crispi That explains why it was Benedict XVI who composed such lenient policies back in 2009.
In Frank's CHurch, it's not about sin, it's not about vows, it's not about condemnation, it's about "fraternity".
This is not as much about 'punishment' as it is about facing up to living according to one's sacred vows and doing the responsible thing with respect to this child. Anything less than leaving the ministry would not be in accord with these priorities.
This used to happen, more often than we’d think. Today, it is less common. In the past, it would have been kept secret. If the priest doesn’t want to be laicized, it is not a “laicizing offense.” If he wished to marry the woman, the Church would normally laicize him, and dispense him from celibacy after a time, for the sake of the child.
