Rebel Nuns Leave Belorado Monastery Before Eviction

At 2:46 a.m. on March 12 the “rebel nuns” of Belorado, Spain, quietly left their historic monastery, ending a 22-month conflict with the Bishop. Just hours before a court-ordered eviction, the former abbess symbolically extinguished the last candle on the altar and turned off the lights. Then, the seven remaining Poor Clares departed in silence.

Their lawyers later handed the keys to the Spanish Civil Guard, and a representative of the Poor Clare federation was expected to receive them.

The dispute began in 2024 when the Poor Clare nuns rejected the authority of modern popes, joining different sedevacantist bishops. They lost the legal battle over the monastery.

The future of both the nuns and the centuries-old monastery remains uncertain.
