Three Friars.
A rare shot of three types of friars together in Blackfriars church, Oxford. The name Friar is a corruption of the French word frère ("brother" in English), and dates from the 13th century. The French word frère in turn comes from the Latin word frater, which also means "brother". Friars are like monks who live in communities and pray the Divine Office but unlike monks, they are not bound to a particular monastery for life but to an international Order. Friars are thus called itinerants. They are also mendicants, espousing poverty and begging for their living unlike the monks who generally have land and property on which they work for a living. In this photo, we see a Greyfriar (Franciscan), a Blackfriar (Dominican) and a Whitefriar (Carmelite). Although the White Friar is not wearing his white cape over his brown habit, he may still be called this!
