German Catholic Women's Association Calls for Abortions in Catholic Hospitals
The Catholic Women's Community of Germany (kfd) has called for abortions to be permitted in Catholic hospitals, adopting the position at its federal assembly in Mainz last weekend.
Delegates approved by a large majority an eleven-page policy paper titled "Between the Protection of Life and Self-Determination: The kfd's Positions and Perspectives on Section 218 of the German Criminal Code."
The document states that "pregnancy terminations must also be possible in Catholic hospitals," claiming that the current lack of access endangers the physical and mental health of mothers with unintended pregnancies.
The paper also criticizes what it describes as "fundamentalist and anti-democratic" influences in the abortion debate and warns against uncritical support for pro-life groups such as the "March for Life" movement.
