This Was Quick: Opus Dei Submitted New Statutes
Pope Francis demanded changes to the statutes in the Motu Proprio Ad Charisma Tuendum (2022), in order to alter the structure of Opus Dei, changing it from a quasi-diocese with its own bishop to a religious community for priests.
Two previous drafts had been submitted, but each was rejected. The content of the new proposal has not been made public.
During one of his first official audiences, Pope Leo XIV received Monsignor Ocáriz. Just one month later, new statutes were submitted. Clearly, Leo XIV asked to fulfil what had been left pending during Francis's pontificate.
In his statement on 11 June, Monsignor Ocáriz wrote: “I would like to inform you about the work of adapting the Statutes. It had been foreseen to complete its study at the General Congress, but, as you know, since it coincided with the vacancy of the See, it was considered opportune not to do so.
The members of the Congress gave their positive opinion so that, with the new Council and Advisory Council, we could complete the revision of the Statutes and submit them to the Holy See for approval, which we have done today. It has been a three-year journey, accompanied by the prayers of all, which I ask you to intensify in this final stage.”
