The Italian daily Il Tempo published on its front page the news that Cardinal Parolin's signature was on the document approving the scandalous London property deal that cost the Vatican 140 million euros.
The piece may be the final blow against a potential Parolin papacy, although informed cardinals already knew that Parolin was in the middle of the scandal.
The leaked document is dated 25 November 2018. It meticulously describes the financial and patrimonial operation of which the Vatican had denied any knowledge ("knew nothing").
At the bottom of the document is a comment by Cardinal Parolin, written by hand:
"Having received assurances about the soundness of the operation (which would bring advantages to the Holy See), its transparency and the absence of reputational risks (which, once over, would be less than those linked to the management of the GoP Fund), I am in favour of concluding the contracts."
Cardinal Parolin made his decision after hearing the opinion of Monsignor Alberto Perlasca the previous evening. The latter is the main accuser of Cardinal Angelo Becciu.
Cardinal Becciu is an accomplice to the deal. He was the only one convicted of financial crimes.
Main points of the judges' conviction of Becciu were, independently of the London deal, the transfer of Vatican money to the bank accounts of friends and family.
