The Archdiocese of New York, led by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, published a notice in its December bulletin about alterations to sanctuaries in churches, because some pastors have been inquiring about reinstalling kneelers to receive Communion.
For Dolan [and only for him] "there is no need for it" because it would "suggest a posture" for receiving Holy Communion other than the "stated norm" of standing. "Standing norm" is an expression of Dolan's legalism.
"No one is sure where the impetus for this is originating, but it seems to be intensifying," the notice admits without wanting to be funny.
