On Camera: Cardinal Radcliffe's False Claims About Homosexual Eucharist
The interview is obvious gaslighting, not to say blatant lying, given that the livestream had been published on YouTube.
The event was held on June 13 to mark the 50-year homosexual partnership of Julian Filochowski and Martin Pendergast, two longstanding figures in "pastoral outreach" to homosexual Catholics. The principal celebrant was Fr. Jim O'Keefe, with concelebrants including Bishop John Crowley, emeritus of Middlesbrough, and Bishop John Rawsthorne, emeritus of Hallam.
"I gave no blessing to anyone"
Cardinal Radcliffe claimed: "I gave no blessing to anyone and had not been aware that any blessings would be given."
However, the picture above shows him making the sign of the cross during the blessing of the two homosexuals standing side by side like a married couple. The text was based on a liturgical formula approved by the bishops of Belgium: "Giving thanks that the Church offers blessing to those who seek it in spirit and in truth, we ask, O God of love, that your grace come down upon Julian and Martin as they mark the 50th anniversary of their relationship. May their love continue to be generous, ever attentive to the needs of others, and deepen all that unites them."
"It was agreed that this occasion should be private"
Cardinal Radcliffe also claimed that the liturgy was "private."
The evidence points to the contrary: around 150 people attended, guests came from several countries, professional photographs were taken, New Ways Ministry covered the event extensively, and the organizers livestreamed the Mass before later making the video private.
"The Eucharist was not designed to celebrate gay relationships"
Cardinal Radcliffe further rejected the interpretation that the Eucharist celebrated a homosexual relationship: "It was not designed to celebrate gay relationships as such."
In reality, the Eucharist was announced as a thanksgiving "for 50 Years of Friendship, Partnership, and Commitment" of one particular couple.
The Eucharist celebrated fifty years of their partnership, their civil partnership, and their continuing homosexual relationship, concluding with a blessing upon "their relationship."
"I did not refer specifically to theirs"
The Cardinal also defended his preaching on friendship: "I said that friendship is a participation in the life of God. That is perfectly orthodox. I did not refer specifically to theirs."
In reality, he preached: "I believe, Julian and Martin, that your faithful friendship is grounded in a shared passion for peace and for the triumph of justice."
The homily presented this homosexual relationship as a gift from God.
Cardinal Ratzinger Furious About This Couple's "Silver Jubilee"
Already in 2001, the two homosexuals celebrated the 25th anniversary of their sinful relationship, causing a major scandal. The Tablet wrote on June 26, 2026: "Cardinal Cormac may have been troubled by his decision to meddle on that morning 25 years ago. A few months later at an official meeting in Rome, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger—later Pope Benedict XVI—told him that the Holy See was disappointed at the 'muted' response of the English bishops to the celebration of a Mass of Thanksgiving for the friendship of two prominent gay Catholics. You should fire the director of CAFOD, Cardinal Ratzinger told Cardinal Cormac. There was a pause. Then, more steely than he is sometimes given credit for, Cormac retorted, 'Non posso e non lo farò' ('I can't and I won't')."
The two homosexuals had been unable to celebrate a thanksgiving Eucharist for their civil partnership in 2006.
Letter from Francis Read during Eucharist
Now, they contrasted those days with the climate created under Pope Francis. Fr. O'Keefe summed up the governing maxim of the day: "Then was then, and now is now."
He also read a deliberately ambiguous letter from Francis praying that the two men might experience the Lord's loving presence "in accordance with the teachings of the Gospel."
