From July 2025: Conservative Bishop Charles Morerod of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg wants a national digital celebret system for priests in Switzerland. He is president of the Swiss Bishops' Conference. He is following a model that has already been established in France in 2023. Updated annually, the system allows parishes to verify whether a priest from another diocese is authorised to perform sacraments, and if there are any restrictions on his ministry. In an interview with RTS, Bishop Morerod said that he would like to adapt the French model for use in Switzerland. Under the proposed system, priests would be given an identity card containing a QR code. Parishes could scan the code to check the priest's faculties and any concerns or past sanctions. Bishop Morerod noted that a similar system has already been implemented in his own diocese. However, he acknowledged that not all members of the Swiss Bishops’ Conference are convinced, particularly in German-speaking Switzerland, where the French model is less well known. “The process has begun,” he said.
