Leo XIV's October Synod about Accompaniment of the Divorced
The format is described as "synodal," involving a process of listening, prayer, and discernment. The aim is "to discern the direction in which the Holy Spirit is leading us today."
The five discussion themes are:
• Families today: reality, beauty and challenges
• Young people and the discovery of the vocation to marriage (including cohabiting couples)
• Married life: the first years of marriage—a decisive time
• In the difficulties of life: accompanying and supporting
• Christian families as subjects of the Church's mission
The fourth theme speaks of “failure” and the “gap between the ideal and reality.” It says those who “have experienced separation and divorce” should feel listened to, involved, and co-responsible. The meeting also discusses “concrete experiences [that] already reveal today the face of a Church increasingly capable of proximity, discernment, accompaniment and appreciation.”
