Inside the cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, the award-winning French historian, journalist and essayist, 78 year-old Dominique Venner committed suicide on Tuesday by a gunshot to the mouth. In his early life, Venner was active in the French nationalist movement but from 1971 he ceased all political activities in order to focus on his career as a historian. Venner had a critical view of the Church and showed a tendency toward paganism. In his final blog posting, also published on Tuesday, Venner claimed: “We must remember according to the ingenious phrase of Heidegger (in Being and Time) that the essence of man is in his existence and not in some «other world».

Father Longenecker wrote recently on his blog about parents complaining about their children having stopped practicing their faith. For him the problem lies in the wrong education of a whole generation. Quote: We’ve driven them off with being nice. Nice like McDonald’s. Nice like Disneyland. We made catechesis and sacraments nice. We spoke about peace and justice and forgot about the part about the cross in the Gospel. Finally, the children figured out that they could be nice without the church. Plus: we never prepared them for having some backbone and self-discipline if they were going to make it in the spiritual life. We never said to confirmation kids that Catholic is a serious business of soul making and if they aren’t going to be there 100% they shouldn’t bother.

Southwark archbishop Peter Smith has defended the invitation of the gay pressure group Stonewall to St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Wimbledon, south London. St Mary’s had invited Stonewall, a virulently anti-Catholic homosexual lobby group, to teach staff lessons to prevent – quote - “homophobic bullying”. In a letter to a concerned Catholics Smith expressed his support for the Stonewall workshops saying that they simply give appropriate training without saying anything contrary to Catholic teaching. Protect the Pope comments: There are not two Stonewalls – one that attacks the Church publicly, mocks Catholic bishops and campaigns against our moral teachings and one that runs education workshops. They are all one and the same group that promotes sexual immorality. Stonewall has no place in a Catholic school. Gloria.tv wonders if Archbishop Smith will next invite members of the German Bishops' Conference to lecture students on the benefits of the morning-after pill?

59 percent of the priests in the US do not like the new English Mass translations that were introduced in the fall of 2011 according to a survey released Tuesday by the liberal Saint John’s School of Theology in Collegeville, Minn. The study evaluated the responses of 1,536 priests from 32 U.S. dioceses. 80 percent of those surveyed said they agreed with an assessment of the new language as “awkward and distracting.” The numbers of priests who responded to the survey represent some 3.7 percent of the nearly 42,000 in the U.S. San Diego, Calif., Bishop Robert Brom, is quoted by the National Catholic Reporter saying – quote: “The views of priests must be taken into consideration.” Gloria.TV believes that bishop Brom is caring about the opinion of liberal priests.
