Bishop José Rico Pavés, 57, of Jerez, Spain, issued a statement on the international scandal caused by the Salesian priest Marco Antonio Martínez Moreno, who appeared to celebrate the Eucharist at a swimming pool.
The statement on the diocesan website (July 31) acknowledges that "a few days ago the Salesian priest Marco Antonio Martínez Moreno published on social networks some photos in which he appears to be celebrating the Eucharist in a way that is manfestly contrary to the liturgical norms of the Catholic Church. The photos were taken in Islantilla (Huelva) during a youth camp at the Manuel Lora Tamayo Salesian School in Jerez de la Frontera."
The bishop has asked the priest for a clarification and Fr Martínez Moreno published this apology:
"I am very sorry for any damage that may have been caused to our beloved Church. Obviously, the context of the paraliturgy that we celebrated is missing. The Eucharist was not celebrated in the pool, nor is that moment part of the Eucharist. There is always an explanation of the different parts of the Eucharist before it begins. On this day, it was the time to explain this moment and its meaning, together with the Lord's Prayer".
Bishop Rico Pavés has reminded the priest that “young people are miseducated when they are not even helped to distinguish the liturgy from the beach, and scandal is caused to all when a priest makes and breaks the liturgy as he pleases".
