Cristina Kirchner, Argentine President, To Be Godmother Of Lesbian Couple's Child
Karina Villaroel and Soledad Ortiz, who had their baby on Jan. 27, reached out to Kirchner through Facebook. Krichner saw the message and agreed to be the godmother for the newborn.
"Cristina has agreed to be godmother," Villaroel told reporters. "What a great gesture! I hope she can come to the [baptism] ceremony and does not send a representative. It's a dream come true for us."
Argentine President Cristina Kirchner was who pushed same-sex marriage legislation which was approved in 2010 legalized same-sex marriage in 2010, making it the first Latin American country to do so.
Alex Freyre, a gay-rights activist, told the Herald he largely agreed with those who said Pope Francis was at least indirectly to thank for this development.
“The media wants a gay-friendly pope and so too does society,” he said. “The fact that he is Argentine and he senses the exposure gay-rights issues get in this country, I think is a good thing and it helps.”
The two are non-practicing Catholics and they say they will encourage Umma to choose her religion on her own.
