Linz Cathedral Tries Again: Exhibition Shows "Holy Family"

Until October 2, the exhibition "Umstellung" is on display in the West Chapel at the back area of Linz Cathedral, Austria. In charge of the Diocese of Linz is Bishop Manfred Scheuer.

In the chapel, there are eight tables. They symbolize boards as used in psychological family therapy. The constellation of family members is represented by ceramic objects. They are fingerprints and handprints by the artist Elke Punkt.

The position of the mother - the "hand" - is central to the family structure. The other family members are the smaller "fingers", depicted in earthy, muted colours such as green and brown.

A table in the center represents the "Holy Family". The seven tables around it are real families chosen by the artist.

There are many figures at the table of the supposed Holy Family. They are the "brothers and sisters" of Christ. An explanatory note states: "Whether they are physical siblings, step-siblings, close relatives, cousins or, in a symbolic sense, members of the Christian community, is a matter of theological interpretation. It is not the subject of the artistic work".
