The idea of creating a refreshment point on the terrace of the number one basilica, practically above the tomb of the Apostle Peter, is hard to digest: several prelates, when asked about it yesterday morning, did not hide their discomfort or wrinkled their noses. The project approved in its time by Francis (and certainly also by Leo XIV) has begun to spark discussion in the curia, and once again, two distant approaches clash: on one side, those innovative cardinals and bishops who are generally in favor of a more modern and less rigid basilica, a sort of St. Peter's 2.0, capable of opening without prejudice to mass tourism, not only to generate revenue but to give the idea of a home with doors open to all. However, this reformed version cannot reconcile with the rigor of the more traditional curial side, which for some time has aimed for maximum respect for this very special place of worship, considering it was built right on the tomb of the apostle favored by Christ. A unique basilica both spiritually and historically. Consequently, the idea of having entire groups intent on eating pizzas, ham flatbreads, pasta with sauce, perhaps ordering spritzes on the large terrace in the shadow of the gigantic statues of the apostles, does not sound to all monsignors as the best solution. "It would be unthinkable to have something like this on the roof of a Synagogue, at the Wailing Wall, or above the Kaaba in Mecca, or even on the terrace of Westminster," a prelate grumbled yesterday morning, asking for anonymity.
