€5000 A Day: Mayor Condemned for Putting Up Nativity Scene

A judge condemned on January 18 the town of Beaucaire, Southern France, for installing a Nativity Scene in the town hall.

The town must remove the scene within two days or pay €5,000 per day until it is gone.

However, Mayor Julien Sanchez has taken the matter to the Conseil d’État, the supreme court for administrative justice, and sues the State for discrimination.

The creche was presented as "cultural and festive exhibition of Provencal Christmas Nativity scenes". Since Sanchez’ election in 2014, it was displayed every year.

The mayors of Perpignan and Béziers have also installed crèches within their town halls.

Yewrop doesn't work that way @Louis IX Their judges are even more political than Murrica's with far greater jurisdiction and authority.

Make them send their thugs after you. It’s what it all comes down to now.

Yewrop doesn't work that way @Louis IX Said that yesterday. Still sayin' it today. What would happen is something like this... Mayor refuses to take the Nativity scene down. The fines start mounting day by day... within a week or so, the mayor's political enemies will gain enough fear of watching the city bankrupted, they'd call some emergency session and using the usual parliamentary procedures, the city officials would impeach him.
Then a lengthy series of back-room negotiations would happen ultimately resulting in the Judge "revising" the HUGE fine to something affordable but still big enough to ensure nobody defies such an order again.
No thugs, no HBO mini-series drama. All done with letters and boring meetings. As for "make them make you..." Yeesh. Again, they don't need thugs to do that. Judge issues an order to your bank. The bank withdraws the funds from your account WITHOUT your permission since they're following a court-order. And then you rush in full of butt-hurt and fail screaming at the branch manager, the day after you get your next bank-statement.
No "thugs" there, either. Except maybe for the police who'll show up the after a clerk hits the silent alarm button when you started throwing your weight around a little too much. Then, if they're in a playful mood, they'll provoke you, you'll raise your voice to them. and bang! Gotcha. "Yerr-unnerarest fer disorderly conduct. Git onna groun and put-cher hands on yer head. " Enjoy your court appearance and you're still out the money for the fine you refused to pay.. :-)

Louis IX

Don’t pay the fine. Make them make you pay the fine.
