Ma noi cristiani – noi cattolici! – dobbiamo essere primariamente testimoni di pace o di verità? La pace viene prima o dopo l’annuncio della verità? Quando il Papa, in occasioni come quelle dell’incontro con i giovani, chiede di ripetere “Vogliamo la pace nel mondo”, non fa altro che far eco a quello che molti altri leader mondiali, religiosi o laici, dichiarano. La richiesta di pace è nobile e universale, ma non basta. Se il nostro annuncio si fermasse lì, rischieremmo di ridurre la missione della Chiesa a un’ideologia che non distingue il cristiano da chiunque altro, riducendo la Chiesa a una delle tante forze umane che si battono per un mondo migliore. Un capo di stato, un musulmano, un ateo di buona volontà potrebbero facilmente dichiarare le stesse parole: “Vogliamo la pace nel mondo”. Eppure la Chiesa ha una missione unica e diversa, che non si limita a proclamare la pace come ideale, ma proclama la verità che è Cristo stesso.

But we Christians – we Catholics! – are we called primarily to be witnesses of peace or of truth? Does peace come before or after the proclamation of truth? When the Pope, on occasions such as the gathering with young people, asks them to repeat “We want peace in the world,” he is simply echoing what many other world leaders, religious or secular, already say. The call for peace is noble and universal, but it is not enough. If our proclamation stopped there, we would risk reducing the mission of the Church to an ideology that does not set Christians apart from anyone else, turning the Church into just one of many human forces striving for a better world. A head of state, a Muslim, or a well-intentioned atheist could easily say the same words: “We want peace in the world.” And yet the Church has a unique and different mission, one that does not merely proclaim peace as an ideal, but proclaims the truth — which is Christ Himself.
