The Pope is not taken seriously: On Friday, during an audience with Catholic gynecologists, Pope Francis denounced abortion as a symptom of today's "throw-away culture" and encouraged Catholic doctors to refuse to perform them. But, the anticlerical media still glowing after Francis’ last week interview, did not take him seriously. CBS news.com called the Pope’s words against abortion – quote – “an olive branch of sorts thrown to the doctrine-minded, conservative wing of the Catholic Church.”
The pope is not condemning his predecessors: The Vatican felt it necessary to deny that Pope Francis stands in stark contrast to the priorities of his two immediate predecessors. Greg Burke, the Vatican's senior communications adviser, insisted Friday that Francis was by no means calling into question the papacies and priorities of John Paul II and Benedict XVI. "The pope is not condemning his predecessors," Burke told The Associated Press.
No right and wrong any more? Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Ireland's most liberal leading prelate, said Francis' interview will be tough for the Church to put into action because there is a tendency to get – quote - "trapped" into the right and wrong, white and black of Catholic teaching. Quote: "It's a way of thinking that will actually be very hard for the right and the left of the church, either of them, to accept," he told RTE radio. But, he said Francis wasn't dismissing everything that has been taught to date.
Abortionists hail the Pope: American Catholics like the downplaying of moral issues by Pope Francis according to the Christian Science Monitor. The Monitor quotes Jon O’Brien, president of the pro-abortion group Catholics for Choice: “The Pope’s message resonate with so many Catholics because it reflects our personal experiences—Catholics are gay and lesbian; Catholics use birth control and Catholics have abortions.” O’Brien hope – quote - that this attitude starts to take effect immediately at the United Nations, where the Vatican continues to take extreme positions against contraception, abortion and sexual and reproductive rights, having a very negative impact on the lives of Catholics and non-Catholics throughout the world.” Gloria.tv believes that the mainstream Church has already, to quote Pope Francis, “fallen like a house of cards” and it isn’t because homilies overemphasized pro-life and marriage issues. It's just the opposite.
