New Synodal Report: Laity at All Decision-Making Levels

Today, the Vatican released the final report of Synodal Study Group 6, which deals with relations between bishops, religious and consecrated life, and lay ecclesial associations.

Under a proposal to “establish more synodal structures,” the report calls for “equitable and participatory representation” of consecrated persons and laity “at all decision-making levels” - and: “as full members and not merely as consultants, in diocesan, national, and international commissions, as well as in Vatican dicasteries.”

At the diocesan level “it is necessary to allow for broader participation of consecrated persons in the decision-making processes of the local Church.”

Women Religious in the Selection of Bishops

The report proposes to: “allow women religious to participate in the process of electing bishops responsible for consecrated life at the national and diocesan levels”.

It also proposes their participation in the election of chaplains for religious communities.

“Gender Equality” in the Workplace

Among the principles governing relations between bishops and religious institutes, the report lists “human dignity and gender issues.”

It then states: “A clear mechanism for implementing gender equality in the workplace must be developed.”

The report does not define what this mechanism would entail.

Future Priests of Synodality

Major seminaries and novitiates are to include modules on synodality, including “dialogue and listening” and “conversation in the Spirit.”

Future priests are also to study: “the theology of synodality by deepening the concepts of mutuality, equality, ministerial diversity, communion, co-responsibility, and service in the ecclesial mission”

The report proposes formation for consecrated persons and laity in “pastoral leadership and ecclesial governance” “to prepare them to assume more significant roles”.

Mandatory Seminars for Bishops

Annual meetings between bishops and religious using “conversation in the Spirit” are recommended.

The report further states: “Bishops, diocesan priests, and consecrated persons must promote and regularly participate in mandatory seminars and retreats to deepen synodal spirituality.”
