US Senate: Exclude Abortion Funding from 2022 Spending

On July 28, in a 2015-207 vote, U.S. Congress passed its spending bill for 2022 without including prohibitions on taxpayer-funded abortions. The Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) appropriations bill, which provides funding for 40 percent of federal agencies and programs, currently does not include the Hyde Amendment for the first time since the amendment’s implementation in 1976. The legislation has also removed the Weldon Amendment, which provides conscience protections for healthcare workers.

U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, a pro-life Republican from Texas, is right in saying this spending bill is “out of step with the views of most Americans”. A Marist survey shows that in January 2018, 64 percent of Americans opposed using tax dollars to pay for a woman’s abortion.
