Saint Sophronius of Jerusalem | Patriarch and Defender of the Faith | Feast Day March 11th
Saint Sophronius (c. 560–638) was a theologian, monk, and later the Patriarch of Jerusalem. He is remembered for defending the true teaching about Jesus Christ during a time of theological controversy in the Church. Sophronius strongly opposed the heresy of Monothelitism, which claimed that Christ had only one will. He courageously defended the Church’s teaching that Jesus Christ possesses both a divine will and a human will, reflecting His full divinity and humanity. As Patriarch of Jerusalem, Sophronius also lived during the dramatic historical moment when Jerusalem came under Muslim rule. Despite these challenges, he remained faithful in guiding the Christian community. His writings, sermons, and hymns helped strengthen the faith of the Church and preserve orthodox teaching. Travelled widely in the East and West. Taught rhetoric. Monk in Palestine at several houses, including at Bethlehem. Lived several years at Alexandria, Egypt near Saint John the Almoner. Ecclesiastical writer of distinction. Poet and extensive correspondent; some of his writings have survived. Fought the Monothelitism heresy. Patriach of Jerusalem from 634 until his death. Driven from the city by Saracens in 637, he eventually negotiated a peace that guaranteed a level of protection to the city’s Christians.

Originaire de Damas, rhéteur distingué, Sophrone ne tarde pas à abandonner le monde pour vivre le monachisme. Il eut tout de même la passion du voyage notamment en Égypte et en Palestine. C'est en Palestine, en 634, qu'il fut élu, tout laïc qu'il était, patriarche de Jérusalem, siège qu'il occupa peu de temps, obligé de céder devant l'envahisseur et livrer sa ville sainte au calife Omar en 637. Dès son intronisation comme patriarche, ce juge de la foi rassemble autour de lui un concile appelé à se pencher sur l'unité de la personne dans le Christ. Au cours de sa longue carrière, Sophrone écrit des vies de saints, des poèmes et prononce quelques homélies.

À Jérusalem, en 639, saint Sophrone, évêque, qui eut Jean Moschus pour maître et pour ami, avec qui il visita les lieux où vivaient les moines. Élu évêque de ce siège, après saint Modeste, lorsque la ville sainte tomba aux mains des Perses, il défendit vigoureusement la foi et la sécurité de son peuple.
