Leo XIV Appoints Smuggled Illegal Immigrant as U.S. Bishop
Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, 55, currently auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington, is the new bishop of Wheeling-Charleston covering West Virginia. He is a formerly undocumented immigrant who was smuggled into the United States in a car trunk.
Furthermore, Leo XIV elevated the prelates Gary Studniewski, 68, and Robert Boxie, 45, as new auxiliary bishops for Washington Archdiocese.
Cardinal McElroy of Washington is one of the strongest pro-homosexual infiltrators. He publicly defended Fiducia Supplicans and said U.S. opposition focused on homosexual blessings reflected “enduring animus” toward homosexuals.
His Archdiocese of Washington spans Washington, D.C., and surrounding Maryland communities, placing its bishops in regular contact with policymakers, diplomats and national media.
With Menjivar, Boxie and Studniewski, Leo XIV has again reinforced a leadership group known for speaking forcefully in favour of illegal immigration.
Pro-homosexual Cardinal McElroy praised his two new auxiliary bishops as “exemplary leaders” who will provide “wisdom, counsel and collaboration.”
Bishop Menjivar criticized the Trump administration's immigration policies, writing in the National Catholic Reporter last April: "The federal government has pursued a 'shock and awe' campaign of aggressive threats and highly visible operations of questionable legality that go far beyond mere immigration 'enforcement.'"
He warned that aggressive enforcement tactics were instilling fear across immigrant and refugee communities.
Menijar is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador himself. He tried to enter the US illegally three times. He finally arrived in California in 1990, having been smuggled across the border between Tijuana and San Diego in a car with his brother.
Over the next several years, he worked as a janitor and in construction in California before deciding to become a priest.
Washington DC priests as New Auxiliary Bishops for Washington
Monsignor Boxie is the first new African-American bishop in nearly a decade and likely the youngest U.S. bishop.
He invented that Trump allegedly eliminates diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across the U.S.
Monsignor Boxie was publicly supportive of the George Floyd efforts. In May 2021, Boxie said continued discussion nearly a year after George Floyd's death was “a sign of hope,” adding that the work was “worth it” if it helped promote Catholic teaching on racism.
In November 2020, Monsignor Boxie participated in an online retreat for the ‘Sisterhood of Progressive Christians’.
Monsignor Studniewski is a former U.S. Army chaplain who retired with the rank of colonel.
He criticized the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, describing it as "very disturbing, very disheartening."
In homilies delivered in the days that followed, he warned against political manipulation, violence and the erosion of democratic norms.
"It was a normal day, until all that sickening unrest in the afternoon," he said, according to the Catholic Standard.
