Cupich Wanted to Be Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops Instead of Robert Prevost - Report

Cardinal Blase Cupich, 76, of Chicago questioned in 2021 Pope Francis’ idea of appointing Bishop Robert Prevost as Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, according to LaNuovaBq.it on January 30.

Cardinal Cupich had ambitions to be appointed to the position himself.

Such a move would have blocked his compatriot’s path to the cardinalate and, in all likelihood, to the papacy.

Francis decided otherwise and appointed Bishop Prevost as Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops in January 2023.

Calling his new quarters an "attic' seems a spin to hype Leo's "humility." Even the description belies the name - what "attic" has a gym & chapel? It's simply a floor with apartments above the former apostolic palace which BTW wasn't that palatial compared to Santa Marta residence - called "hotel" where Francis lived.

Sandy Barrett shares this

With move in date unclear, Pope Leo will live in attic of apostolic palace in rooms not used by Benedict or John Paul; there is a gym set up there, and one guest room, along with a chapel. The windows face the interior of the Vatican, not St. Peter’s Square.
