Friend of Francis Arrested For Fraud

Alice Peressutti, an old friend of Bergoglio, was detained on Friday for suspected fraud against the public administration, embezzlement, and falsification of documents, reports Clarin.com.

Peressutti is the director of institutional relations at the Argentine Ombudsman's Office. The case against her is linked to her work in an NGO for "victims of human trafficking". Her friends defend her and blame the [Peronist/socialist] government.

Peressutti has had a relationship with Bergoglio since he was Buenos Aires Cardinal. They last met in May. She was a speaker at the 2022 World Peace Meeting in Rome.
