"The Stranger" is a song by Gord Downie that makes up his multimedia work titled, The Secret Path which tells the very sad story of Indigenous 12-year-old boy Chanie Wenjak. The work is supported by a novel and a film. The story is that Chanie run away from a Canadian residential school. It was to get away from the disrespect and physical abuse. So, he decided to walk home, a 600 kilometre journey from where the school was located in Kenora, Ontario. The boy never made it because he died of hunger and the cold weather. His body was found near a railroad track on October 7, 1966. The song aims to point out the suffering, loneliness and fear experienced by the children who attended residential schools. It's all become part of the long truth and reconciliation project that Canada's Liberal government adopted in 2015.
