Swedish Parents Lose Custody Battle Over “Religious Extremism” Claims
The couple has been separated from their children for over three years, since 2022.
The case began after their eldest daughter made - and later retracted - a false abuse claim following an argument over not being allowed to use a phone and wear makeup.
Prosecutors found no evidence of abuse, yet the children were still removed.
Authorities later pointed to the family’s church attendance and parenting choices as signs of “religious extremism.”
The daughters themselves have pleaded to be reunited with their parents. Reports say their mental and physical health has worsened in state care, including suicide attempts.
Even after completing required parenting programs and being deemed fit to parent, the parents have not regained custody.
Efforts to relocate the girls to relatives in Romania were also denied, and social services are reportedly moving toward permanently separating the family through adoption.
The European Court rejected the case on the grounds that legal remedies in Sweden had not been fully exhausted, despite the country’s highest court refusing to hear it. The family has no further avenues of appeal.
