Vatican Seeks to Reconnect to the Internet - via Commissions and Study Groups

On Tuesday, the General Secretariat of the Synod published two final reports from the study groups established for the October 2024 Synod.

Study Group Number 3 concerns a comprehensive strategy for Christian mission in the digital age (30 pages).

Study Group 4 concerns the reorientation of priestly formation (25 pages).

Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod, claimed that these reports are "not just simple bureaucratic cooperation" – and thereby identified the problem.

The reports' language is repetitive and employs dense synodal vocabulary, frequently referencing the Final Document of the Synod, Vatican II texts and papal addresses.

Vatican Licks Wounds

The Group 3 report on missions in the digital environment recognises that the Church must be present in a culture increasingly shaped by algorithms and online communities: "Digital mission must become part of regular Church structures instead of remaining a niche project."

The document calls on the Church to treat the internet "as real as the physical environment in which we live".

However, the proposed actions are the creation of a Vatican Office or Commission for Digital Culture, canonical study, coordinators, and additional guidelines on online culture.

The report also quotes Leo XIV, who, in May 2025, spoke out against "fake news and the irrational theses of a few loud individuals" urging that they be countered with "in-depth analysis and study".

Communal Understanding of Priesthood

Regarding priest training, Study Group 4 advocates the synodal implementation of existing rules.

The priest's identity should be understood and formed "in and from the People of God".

The report proposes that elements of seminary formation should be more deeply immersed in the life of the People of God, including shared moments of formation with lay people and consecrated persons.

It recommends alternating residence in the seminary with periods in parish communities or other ecclesial settings. Furthermore, it calls for competent women to be included as co-responsible members of formation teams.

Before Holy Orders are conferred, the candidate’s parish priest, those who worked with him in pastoral service, and members of the formation community should be consulted. The views of women should also be given due importance.

The report also calls for training in active listening, dialogue, communal discernment (including 'Conversation in the Spirit'), and engagement with the poor, ecumenism, safeguarding, and digital culture.

What kind of man would want to become a priest knowing that such a formation awaits him?
