A Surviving Anglo-Saxon Inlet In The City Of London
Missed by many, on the North bank of the Thames, in the City of London, you’ll find a surviving Anglo-Saxon inlet.
It is called Queenhithe, established by Alfred the Great in the 9th century. It was later named after Queen Matilda, wife of Henry I.
It was once London’s primary port for foodstuffs such as grain and fish in the medieval period.
It is a scheduled ancient monument and it is worth adding that are not allowed onto the foreshore here as it is protected.
There is also a wonderful mosaic all about the history of London running along one side.
